Overview

This IDC Government Insights Perspective accompanies the Line of Business (LOB) Budget Guide pivot table for federal fiscal years 2009 through 2011. The relevant data can be found in the pivot table and other data sources contained on multiple tabs on the attached Microsoft Excel file. The primary purpose of this companion file is to give details on how the extensive set of numbers in the pivot table is culled and how our overall federal information technology spending model is built. The LOB pivot table document offers unprecedented detail of where federal government IT budget money is targeted. By providing this data in a pivot table, IDC Government Insights is able to provide multiple ways to sort and view the data while also including details on not only how budget line items are tied to specific federal agencies, subdepartments, and projects but also how each of those budget line items relates to the Office of Management and Budget's (OMB's) LOB initiatives. OMB has strict guidelines for how federal agencies must request and gain approval for any information technology projects they propose. This proposal and approval process is a major part of the federal budgeting progression for IT programs.
