Overview
This Government Insights update describes the European Union IT activities and programs with a special focus on the executive arm: the European Commission (henceforth EC). The European Commission plays a multidimensional role in the European IT market, developing strategic policies and regulations, funding cooperative research and trans-European pilot projects, and of course purchasing IT products and services for itself. In all of these roles, the Commission offers investment or funding opportunities. This year is particularly important as the starting year of the new financial planning cycle 2007–2013, which traditionally sees the launch of many new programs and projects. This newsletter will track and highlight the most interesting funding opportunities and initiatives. Being the first edition of this newsletter, the update includes a description of initiatives started before 2007 and of the structure of the Commission.
EC funding opportunities are related to the main policy strategies. The Commission first identifies policy priorities and then allocates specific budgets in order to fund projects or initiatives either directly, or indirectly through the Member States. The newsletter will also anticipate the main policy strategies leading to EC budgets in the near future.
