IDC Government Insights Announces Mobility Trends for Western European Government Sector
LONDON, February 18, 2013 — A new study from IDC Government Insights reveals that approximately 60% of employees in the respondents' agencies use the iPhone, clearly reflecting an increasing uptake of bring-your-own-device (BYOD) policies in the Western European government sector. The study analyzes mobile technology adoption and investment plans in Western Europe, summarizing the results of IDC Government Insights' annual survey of government IT and non-IT executives in France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the U.K.
The study also highlights that:
- In central government, 61% of survey respondents plan to invest in mobile CRM applications in the next 24 months, compared with 72% in local governments.
- The deployment of BYOD policies defines a new way of operating, both in terms of device management (with fast adoption of mobile device management solutions) and application provisioning (with the increased uptake of applications developed by non-traditional suppliers, such as employees, citizens, and SMEs).
- Government IT executives should work with their business counterparts and individual employees to prioritize usage scenarios where mobile solutions can add value in terms of productivity, customer service, and transparency, and then design the appropriate policies that take into account practical use cases.
- Technology suppliers should offer native mobile applications development, particularly for citizen relationship management use cases, both to local government and central government agencies.
"Consumerization of devices is rapidly translating into consumerization of applications both for citizen services and internal employees, such as BI and time reporting, which means government IT staff will have to nurture capabilities to make sure solutions are enterprise ready in terms of security, interoperability, and scalability, so that they can be provisioned rapidly rather than trying to build too many of them in-house," said Silvia Piai, research manager, IDC EMEA Government Insights.
The study, Western Europe Government Sector Mobility Trends, 2012–2013 (IDC Government Insights #GIPP02V, January 2013), is the fifth in a series of studies that analyzes the results of IDC Government Insights' annual survey. Other studies analyze IT security, Big Data, social media, cloud, vertical solution investments, and enterprise solution investments.
